Fishing Report

6/16/2008

I have decided to take off this year from salmon fishing and work on some various things. I will update the reports as they come in. Right now there is not much to report about as far as salmon. There are a few catches here and there but nothing substantial.

11/28/2007

Shoreline salmon fishing is spotty. In Chicago, Jackson Park has been the most consistent. In Waukegan, bait fishing are starting to take some kings and steelhead from the piers as reported the Salmon Stop. When weather allows boaters are taking perch in 55-65 feet south of Great Lakes. From Waukegan boaters are finding younger kings, browns and steelhead in 35-50 feet in front of Great Lakes.

11/15/07

I have gone up to the Wisconsin north woods a few times now and harvested only one partridge. There has been to much cover or overgrowth until recently to get a good shot off. I expect to post more on my harvests in the fall here. I stored my boat Little Snapper in the later part of September and had a rough season during July. The fuel system was contaminated and I spent my time on cleaning it out. Otherwise when I was able to fish it was enjoyable.

8/8/07

I went fishing solo for a few hours Wednesday night and went 4 for 5 on chinook salmon. I went south of Algoma about 6 miles and in 90 feet of water. My strikes were 75 feet down using a 12 inch white flasher and a squid fly combination. Most action started at 8:30 p.m. again. Nice night on the lake. I noticed the salmon have started to turn color so the salmon should start to be more predominant closer to the harbor. Hopefully we can get a westerly wind for a few days to turn the water over and bring some of the colder water closer to shore.

8/7/07

Teresa and I went for a late evening outing off of Algoma searching for salmonids. We did not get a strike until 8:30 p.m. in the evening. Teresa's first fish was a 12 pound Rainbow off a dipsie 42 feet down in 80 feet of water on a glow Pearl Yuck spoon. She then took two kings. One of the kings was off the downrigger weighing around 14 pounds on a flasher and a glow white fly 54 feet down and a shaker off the same dipsie with the same spoon. We ended going 3 for 5 and all our action was 5 to 8 miles south of Algoma in 85 to 78 feet of water. Teresa did an excellent job as a first mate and reeling the fish in by herself.

7/17/07

Teresa was the first mate for this outing in the evening. We worked from 80 feet of water out to 130 feet of water around 3 to 5 miles north of Algoma. We went 1 for 3 and took a nice king. The king came 40 feet down and in 122 feet of water on a flasher fly. The evening was cut short due to fog. Hope to get out soon.

7/15/07

Teresa and I did the afternoon bite. We started out up by Clay Banks in 100 feet of water and trolled back to Algoma and did not get a bite until we were about 5 miles north of it. We did not seem to locate the fish. We ended up harvesting 1 king out of 4 releases. It came on a dipsie with flasher fly.

7/14/07

It has been a long time since I have updated this log. During the past 2006 fall hunting season I was in Wisconsin north woods about twenty times. Gunther did well hunting for grouse and I was able to harvest a nice 5 point buck during the Wisconsin gun season. This year I had some fuel issues with the boat and was not able to fish until yesterday after troubleshooting the problem. I was able to finally get out Friday from 4:00 p.m. until dark on the thirteenth. I went north about 5 miles out of Algoma and set-up in 100 feet of water. I ran only two down riggers because of the winds and waves. I went 3 for 4 harvesting chinook salmon. They came between 60 to 70 feet down on the down riggers using flasher fly combo's. I'm excited to be back on the water and I'm hoping to have more reports for everyone shortly.

11/21/06

During the past couple of months I have made about ten trips into the Wisconsin north woods scouting for new areas to hunt. During some of the trips I have taken Gunther my German Shorthaired Pointer along to try to harvest some grouse. We kicked up about four partridge but I never had a clean shot at any of them. Gunther is improving with age as far as staying in closer when working different areas. I tried a new area for gun deer hunting just south of the town of Goodman in Marinette County but to no avail on the opener I had blaze orange all around me. I ended up hunting my old stomping grounds in the Silver Cliff Township but did not see any deer. Some good friends of mine the Frayseth's let me hunt their private property and on the twentieth I harvested a five point buck weighing one hundred seventy pounds off their pristine property. Much appreciation goes to the Frayseth's for letting me hunt there parcel because I don't think I would of harvested a deer in the public areas around there. Other hunters I had talked to say it was extremely slow for them and at the Red Pine Amoco on County Road C they said the numbers were down for the opening weekend registration. Best of luck to other hunters during the Wisconsin nine-day deer hunt.

10/5/06

I installed a Furuno radar system on my boat and stored it for the season. It was a good season harvesting king salmon but the fish seemed to be on the smaller size this year. Anyway I will be gearing up for the hunting season and I will keep you updated to my outings as the fall sets in.

9/3/06

I had the privilege of Tad and Marcy Frayseth accompany me for a short night on the boat fishing from 6:00 p.m. till 8:30 p.m. on Sunday night. They made great company because they are dear to me and they have a vast wealth of angling knowledge. We ended up going 1 for 4 and Marcy harvested a Chinook salmon. The salmon was caught in 145 feet of water and 100 feet down north of Algoma. I wish I could of filled the box for them but they seemed to enjoy themselves on the big pond anyway. Some anglers did well and some had limits like us. There were boats fishing the shallows and I did not find out how they did. The season is wrapping up for me and I will be pulling the boat out here shortly.

8/23/06

Teresa, Gunther and I went fishing out of Algoma from 6:00 p.m. till 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night. The bite started at 7:15 p.m. and we ended up 2 for 11. We harvested 2 kings around 10 pounds. I have never experienced so many missed fish in an outing. We had 2 Gamakatsu treble hooks loose a point and 6 fish come off the hardware. I'm sure the hooks were in pretty good condition. I will have to look into it further. Teresa did well fighting the big one all by herself for a while. Best action was 135 degrees out of Algoma in 103 to 120 feet of water and 77 to 98 feet deep trolling north and south.

8/16/06

Gunther and I went fishing out of Algoma from 6:00 a.m. till 9:00 a.m. We setup in 60 feet of water and did not get our first bite or release until 70 feet of water and 60 feet down. Needless to say I missed it. The second bite came in front of the harbor in 90 feet of water and the downrigger set at 90 deep. It was a 12-pound salmon that bit on a clear blue flasher with a white fluorescent glow fly. The third salmon at 15 pounds took a magnum white flasher with a white fluorescent glow fly in 170 feet of water and 89 feet deep which made me 2 for 3 on the morning. It was an ok morning for most anglers getting a few hear and there.

8/11/06

I went fishing with Teresa on the ninth during the late evening bite. The water had some pretty high swells at times and made it difficult to run fishing lines. We only fished the last hour of light and went 1 for 2 on salmon. Teresa reeled the salmon in pretty much by herself. She will turn out to be a great fisher woman if she keeps spending time pursuing it.

8/8/06

Teresa and I did the evening tour out of Algoma. We went 4 for 5 harvesting king salmon. One salmon at eighteen pounds and the others around fourteen pounds. The bite for us was good from 8:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. We caught our fish in 108 feet of water and 33 to 66 feet down. Trolling north the salmon were enticed on flasher flies mostly off the riggers. We did have one nice one on a wire pound ball set 10 passes using a super glow Fishlander spoon.

8/7/06

Gunther and I fished the afternoon bite in some rough water out of Algoma. We went 2 for 4 catching kings. The fish were active for us from 8:15 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. north of town in 107 feet of water and working 37 to 70 feet down trolling northwest and using flasher flies off the riggers. Gunther also got the flu, poor dog!

8/3/06

I took Gunther fishing this morning from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m. I had one release and had to deal with fishhook water fleas fouling the lines so rather than trying to get a fish I called it an early morning and did some boat maintenance. Other fisherman did ok north of town in 70 feet of water and 40 feet deep.

7/26/06

I went fishing out of Algoma on the twenty-fifth during the afternoon bite with a buddy and went 5 for 5 harvesting king salmon. The lake had some pretty good swells and it made it tough to run 4 lines. Our best action was south of the condos in 50 to 60 feet of water trolling southwest and 22 to 35 feet down. The glow pearl Yuck spoon with orange and black ladderback was the most productive lure. There were still weeds in certain areas but it was manageable.

7/18/06

I went for a little fishing trip with my niece Teresa on Tuesday night. The lake was flat and the weather was great. I don't know why we could not get the skunk out of the box but that is what happened. It was a nice evening for a boat ride and Teresa made good company. Other anglers struggled and did not produce in good catch limits, next to none. We did go through 4 swarf's running east to west in 70 to 80 feet of water in which we ran into most of the weeds from Sturgeon Bay Canal that were cut and floated into the big pond.

7/6/06

My niece Teresa Kreuser and I went fishing out of Algoma yesterday on the fifth from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and harvested a nice king salmon weighing 10 pounds. The salmon came on a clear blue flasher and a green blue fly 21 feet down in 61 feet of water north of town. Teresa at 10 years of age and weighing less than 70 pounds handled the fighting salmon like an "Old Hand". She kept on reeling through the salmon's attempts to evade capture and was a great first mate with the company she provided. Good job Teresa and I'm looking forward to fishing with you soon! Other fisherman seemed to average 2 to 3 fish that night and I'm hoping that the fishing will turn for the better in the upcoming weeks.

7/3/06

I took Gunther fishing today and we only had one steelhead or rainbow, which we released. Got a late start and it sounded extremely slow anyway. The trout came on a glow pearl yuck with orange ladder back at 240 feet of water and 35 feet down on the dipsie.

6/29/06

I went fishing solo today from 11:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. and got three salmon weighing between fifteen and nine pounds. I targeted the salmon in 192 feet of water and between 40 to 60 feet down. The hot hardware was a prism flasher and fly off down riggers. Others in the morning did not do so hot. It was a hit or miss day for most anglers.

6/28/06

I finally moored my boat at the Algoma city marina on the twenty-sixth. Talking to other anglers about the fishing scene most of them say it is still hit or miss. Allot depends on location, location and location. Most charters are fishing to the north. I expect things to pick up right now till the end of August and will let you know what happens when I wet my lures.

6/3/06

Fishing right now is sporadic off of Algoma. Anglers who were producing good numbers were finding them between 300 to 400 feet of water working 95 to 125 down. White and green glow Opti Enticer and a green fly were producing good numbers in the early light but then changed to spoons of assorted colors like pearl yuck, black and green mag Pro King, green dolphin spoon and basic orange or orange crush were productive. Right now fish are scattered all over because the thermo cline has not set up yet.

5/30/06

Fishing is hit or miss right now out of Algoma. The best depths to run hardware are between eighteen and forty eight feet. Green and blue colors are working best. I have reconstructed my web page to be an interoperable web page and to be valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional according to W3C validation.

5/15/06

Greetings. I'm trying another web host again. I pulled my boat out of storage and I will hopefully have it in the pond soon. All is good on my end and Gunther is doing great. I will keep you posted as to when the fishing picks up.

Here is some information on fishing lure colors:

Every spring, the tackle counters of local sport shops are filled with attractive displays of the latest lures in a myriad of colors designed to capture the attention of eager anglers, to say nothing of eager fish. Most tackle boxes are bulging with lures of every hue, and each fishing trip becomes a study of what color bait will entice the fish today. However, certain principles of vision and the behavior of light as it penetrates the water can make lure selection more scientific.

Most fish can see in color. As in people, the retina of a fish's eye contains two types of cells, rods and cones. Cones are used for day vision and are the cells used to see colors. Rods are used for night vision and cannot distinguish colors, although they can judge light intensity. The eyes of most freshwater fish contain both rods and cones, though day feeders tend to have more cones, and night feeders more rods. In theory, then, day feeders like bass, trout, and salmon are more sensitive to color than night feeders like walleyes. Studies have shown that rainbow trout and Pacific salmon have color vision similar to that of humans. They can distinguish complementary colors and up to 24 spectral hues. Other studies have shown that brown trout are capable of sharply focusing on near and far objects at the same time and that they can clearly see different colors at different distances.

But light behaves differently in water than it does in air. The various colors of light travel at different wavelengths. The longest wavelengths are the reds, followed by oranges, yellows, greens, blues, indigos, and violets. When light travels through water, some of its energy is absorbed, and the longest wavelengths are the ones absorbed first. Thus, the warmer colors fade out and gradually appear black as light penetrates the water column. Red light is almost completely absorbed within the first 15-20 feet. Orange penetrates to 30-40 feet, and yellow to 60-70 feet, while green and blue remain visible for as deep as the light penetrates. The total amount of light also decreases with depth. At 50 feet, a yellow lure will still appear yellow, but will not appear as bright as it did at 20 feet. While red may be visible down to 15 feet in the clear water of open Lake Michigan, it may disappear within six inches of the surface in the turbid Fox River. At depths where it is nearly dark, a white or silver lure would show up better than a blue or green lure against a blue-green background of water. Products that are designed to reflect any light that strikes them, like Prism-lite, also make lures more visible.

Commercial fishermen have experimented with this principle in reverse, using it to make their nets less visible. Nets for use in very deep water have been dyed blue or green still they would blend into the background color of the water. Perch fishermen in southern Green Bay have experimented with dying their nets red, presumably because red fades out first in these shallow turbid waters. Total light intensity is also important. On a cloudy day, colors will not penetrate as deep as they will on a sunny day. At dusk, as light intensity falls, reds are the first color to go, followed by orange, yellow, green, and blue. As total light intensity decreases, the fish's eye switches to vision with rods, and the fish is no longer able to distinguish colors. After dark, fishermen should choose between a light lure or dark one. At dawn, as light intensity increases and fish switch back to cone vision, the order is reversed, and blues, greens, yellows, oranges, and reds appear. At early dawn, some anglers are successful with a red J-plug near the surface. To fish striking from below, it shows up as a dark lure against the lightening sky. As the day gets lighter, red no longer works well, and anglers must experiment with more visible colors.

Studies on salmon have shown that their feeding behavior depends on whether they are seeing with rods or cones. During the day, salmon use cones to give them information on the hues and shades of moving prey. When prey are first located, they are stalked and eaten head first. From dusk to dark, rod vision takes over. Schools of prey fish break up and salmon assume a position below their prey to see them in contrast against the water surface, watch them move for a few moments, and then snap them up one by one. Ultimately, the appeal of the lure to the fish is most important. Fish must strike the lure either to eat it or attack it. While fish may locate the general area of the bait by smell or sound, most of the fish in the Great Lakes make their final attack by sight. Fish scents and noisemakers can draw fish to the area of the lure, but before it can strike, the fish must also be able to see it. This is why lure visibility and color are important to successful fishing.-by Lynn Frederick

12/17/05

I did not harvest anything in the fall. I feel disgruntled about the situation. Hopefully the ice-fishing season will be more productive!

11/6/05

I took Gunther hunting on October 29 and he did well. We did not come across any birds but he listened fair enough to his commands. I did not see much sign for deer. Not one scrape or rub on 2 miles of the Marinette County forest. Nick Ackerman harvested a buck on the Minnesota gun opener. Good job Nick!

10/11/05

Gunther and I went up to Marinette this past weekend looking for Grouse. Gunther did not do to well. He would not listen to his commands and was hunting for himself. This happened probably due to me not spending enough time with him. I hope that he improves throughout the season. I also was able to store the boat for the year this past weekend.

10/1/05

I got my web site up and running again Yahoo! During the past fishing season I harvested ten kings and one brown. It was a dismal season. Today I will be storing the boat. Gunther is doing well and is a great companion. I will update as the fall sets in.

3/13/2005

There is not to much to report on the fishing front right now other than a few die hard fishermen dragging there boat over the ice off of Algoma to get a couple of Brown Trout. Gunther had a tremendous hunting season in which he helped me harvest thirteen pheasant at Little Creek Lodge and a grouse up at the Frayseth Camp in Silver Spur Wisconsin. All is good on this end and I hope to be updating more often when I can finally get my boat moored in May.

10/2/04

Trolling action for Chinook salmon for the most part has slowed down right now but offshore steelhead fishing remains good 15 to 25 miles out from shore. Planer boards trailing orange, chartreuse and gold spoons remain productive when fished from the top water to 25 feet down. Shore anglers are still doing well using jointed crank baits, spinners and Champs or Cleos to catch kings. If you still desire to troll for kings the Sturgeon Bay canal is probably your best bet in front of Strawberry Creek. Good luck and tight lines to all.

9/20/04

Shore fishermen have been doing excellent on the river mouths and tributaries. The salmon run will pick up even more if we get some rain. Anglers have been most productive when trolling in 90 feet of water using spoons. There is still great fishing on the pier heads or trolling in front of it. I stored my boat Little Snapper for the season today. On the eighteenth I took Gunther to Little Creek Lodge and we harvested two pheasants. Gunther did well on his pointing and retrieving.

9/15/04

The salmon run in the great lakes and tributaries has begun. When fishing from piers try casting Champs, Cleos and Fastrack Rapalas. Spawn sacs and marshmallows are producing well also. I expect that with a little rain the harbors and tributaries will be swamped with spawning salmon. I did manage to go fishing last week at Voyager Park in De Pere and caught and released a walleye and a sheep head. Twin Rivers in Mishicot would be my first place to fish from the river and second would be Sturgeon Bay's canal. The harbor mouths can be an excellent place also on any pier head. I plan on storing the boat within the next week. The season turned out to be a wash for me with only 8 hours on the pond it was a disappointing season for me. Next year I will be able to spend more time on the pond. Troller's are still doing ok when they can get out due to inclement weather. Trolling in front of the pier head and 140 to 220 feet of water are producing well. Time to gear up for the hunting season. Good luck!

7/26/04

I have not been able to get out on the pond yet due to family obligations but I intend to shortly. I have my dog Gunther home now from his field training at B.K. Kennels and he is doing great. He picked up right where I left off with him in his obedience training. Bill Keppler did a great job training him with positive reinforcement and a strict regimen. I would highly recommend Bill for training, boarding and general advice. He has proved to be a great asset to Gunther and me. For your info Bill trains without shock collars and uses only live birds like Quail and Pigeons. All in all it has been a positive experience and I look forward to working with Bill in the future. The fishing in Algoma has been good but not as hot for some because the thermo cline has never set up consistently; but I speculate it will set up with this beautiful weather we have been having.

7/16/04

I struggled again today on the water to get a fish and when it came my turn I blew it. I had a fish on a dipsie at 12 passes in 70 feet of water using a pearl dodger with a glow white fly. I ended up tearing the hook out of the fish's mouth. I charted an enormous amount of fish in 70 to 80 feet of water and half way down the column north of town about 3 miles. Others did fair on the lake and I did not here of many limit catches. There was a large amount of fishermen on the lake and traffic was heavy. I have not figured it out yet as to why I'm not more productive but I will just have to try more often to figure it out. I think I will work away from the pack next and try out in front of the condos in 40 feet of water.

7/13/04

I set lines at 5:30 in the morning in 80 feet of water and had a double on right away. Down rigger took one king weighing 19 pounds at 70 feet down using a glow white Beechhold flasher with a green glow squid. The dipsie took a 17-pound king at 12 passes using a white dodger and blue/green glow fly. 2.1 was my ground speed for the two salmon. I was not able to get back in to the shallower water until 6:45 and the bite shut down for me. Other troller's did well and the majority of them are using the new flasher with the e-chip on it. Fish were being taken from 40 feet of water to 100 in the morning. North of the harbor sounded to be productive. I hope to get some more time in to get a feel for things in the next few weeks and I will keep you informed.

6/29/04

I went fishing this morning at 5:30 and set up in 80 feet of water. I ended up going 0 for 3. Just bad hook set's I think. Gunther is improving and I decided to keep him in training for at least another month to give him enough training so he can improve around a shotgun. I got to see him swim for his first time on a retrieve and he did well.

6/19/04

I managed to get out on the water during the afternoon on the eighteenth and fished for about an hour with only one release. I did not chart many fish out to 200 feet of water. The waves increased so I called it a night. There were some good catches in the morning and one salmon weighed in at 31 pounds at the fish cleaning station. White flasher and blue green flies were getting some good responses for hardware otherwise it did not seem like there was a pattern to anything yet. Speeds were good between 1.8 to 2.2 and 30 to 90 feet down. On 6/16/04 I got to spend 20 minutes working with Gunther and Bill at B.K. Kennels. Gunther was still sporadic at retrieving and did ok at his pointing. He is 5 1/2 month's old now and I can see that there will be great strides in his training as time goes on. It was great seeing him pointing a bird for the first time.

6/9/04

I completed my boat projects and moored my boat on June 7. I have not been able to get out yet because of the turbulent water. I'm hoping to get out soon and will keep you posted on my outings. I talked to Bill Keppler on 6/5/04 about Gunther's progress and he replied that he was retrieving birds already. Of course it was a little sporadic.

5/27/04

The boat is still in dry dock because I'm still in the process of varnishing and undercoating the boat. The weather has not been cooperating with me. Not much happening on the fishing front right now, mostly lakers are being harvested. The water is cold and not holding many bait fish. Gunther finished his obedience training and knows his commands well. On June 1st Gunther will begin his field training at B.K. Kennels. I will have to give him up for at least a month. (Just a little note:) I love you Uncle Gerald and you will be sadly missed.

4/26/04

As of right now there is not much to report on the fishing front off of Algoma. Some troller's braving the rough waters are getting browns in the 10 to 15 feet of water range but the most productive species is as usual for this time of year the laker's. It appears as though the Algoma City Marina needs to be dredged again this year because of sediment build up. I will be taking the boat out of storage here shortly to get it ready for the season and will keep you informed of any changes or reports. Gunther is doing great and as of 4/23/04 he weighed in at 31 pounds. His obedience training is going great and he appears to be a well-trained puppy.

3/10/04

I purchased a male AKC certified German Short Haired Pointer on 2/9/04. I named the dog Gunther. Gunther was born on 12/31/03 New Years Eve. I will be starting obedience class in April and plan on getting his field training in July. I'm hoping to take Gunther on a pheasant hunt in October of this year in Mitchell, South Dakota. If you are interested in this hunting trip and would like to come along contact me.

2/3/04

I wanted to post the loss of my brother-in-law Mark Kreuser to let everyone know about it. I posted the incident in the Angler's Forum.

11/23/2003

In October of this year I took Tad hunting for geese and I called in 2 geese. Tad managed to harvest one of them. In November on the eighth I hunted the Minnesota deer season for 5 days. I saw 2 doe that were driven to me by my friend Nick. Nick shot his first buck and it looked to weigh around #120. It was a 2 pointer with at least 7-inch tines. Tom the owner of the ranch harvested a 2 pointer also. On November 22, 2003 I went hunting in Marinette county forest. I could not hunt were I wanted to so I hunted the pipeline mostly. It was surreal! I harvested a 10 pointer. It was great! I shot it with a Winchester 32 Special my uncle Ron had given me. (Just a little note:) I Love You Grandma Ruth and you will be sadly missed.

10/14/03

I stored my boat for the season on the last day of September. I will try to update my site on my hunting and ice fishing outings until I can get my boat in next season. I should start bow hunting in the next couple of weeks. I will be deer hunting in Marinette Wisconsin this year and anticipate an exciting season!

9/6/03

I took my brother-in-law out fishing today at 5:30 a.m. The lake was rough today and congested with troller's. We managed to go 3 for 5 and only one rod got broken in three pieces today. All fish came on the glow pearl Yuck between 22 and 28 down in 50 to 65 feet of water. Mark got the flu so it was an early trip. I wish he would of remembered to take his Dramamine because I could see us limiting out on kings. There was no large fish other than the 10 # king we caught. Last night I shot my first goose and it was a blast. One shore fisherman said he caught a salmon off the pier today so if we get a little rain I think the bruisers will be in spawning quickly.

9/5/03

I set lines up in 40 feet of water at 5:45 A.M. and had a hit on a glow green fly 35 down and that was it for flies for me today. I ended up going 5 for 9 and my fish were caught on a glow pearl Yuck and a yellow and white Pro King. My best depths were between 23 and 35 down. Best depth for my fish was between 50 and 60 feet of water. I was trolling on my ground speed between 3.0 and 4.5 mph. The bite was good until 8:30 this morning. Great day to be on the water. Hoping to get out tomorrow. Found a great place to goose hunt and will let you know if I harvest my first goose.

9/2/03

I started out in 40 feet of water at 5:30 A.M. I went 1 for 4 today and my only king came at 80 feet of water at 40 down. Others did better with glow spoons I heard and my fish came on a wire dipsie with a pearl dodger and green /blue fly. The pond was calm today and hopefully it will be on Wednesday.

8/31/03

Went 5 for 7 today but I threw back the shaker so I harvested actually 4 kings. I started in 40 feet of water at 5:30 A.M.I did not see any action until 60 feet of water and I hauled in a king on a prism dodger with a mirage fly 23 down. The mirage combo took all but one release in which I landed a king on a large red fish eye/scale coyote flasher followed by the trusty green glow Howie fly at 65 feet of water and 58 down. All in all it was a great day on the water to wash my lures from 7:00 A.M. until 10:30 in which I had only one release. I did troll out to 130 feet of water and back to 70 and then out to 225 feet of water charting some between the 180 to 205 feet of water between 50 and 85 down. I should have kept that shaker to get my 5 fish limit (j.k.). The salmon seemed to be stacking up; so I would still start in 40 feet of water on Labor Day and run the heavy hardware(flies). Not much to say about spoons today even though some said they ran half spoons and half hardware and the bite was equal among each attractor.

We started out in 70 feet of water and did not get our strikes till we ran between 60 and 45 feet of water. We went 1 for 3 today. Not a very good day but I got to send a fish home with my partner. The hits came on pearl yuck's and a fluorescent orange fly I made up. The strikes were between 30 and 45 down. Waves were picking up so we were off the pond by 8:30. Don't know if the waves will subside by Thursday if we go by what the weathermen say. It sounded like blue was a good color for spoons days' prior.

Took my brother-in-law out today and we went 6 for 9. We started out in 140 feet of water and set riggers and wire and dipsies between 60 to 145 down. The dipsies were the first one's to go off using the Kevorkian spoon. We also had hits on a pearl dodger and mirage fly and a glow pearl yuck. Did not get anything of great size but some nice ones. We had to deal with line tangles for a total of about an hour this morning when it was hot. I'm starting to think that those horrendous hook fleas are part of the factor making the wire rise up into different currents and mixing up the gear and also doing a number on the dipsies. It now is to the point if I don't clean the hook fleas off every 20 minutes or so from all my gear especially the wire I can't even get the lines reeled in without stopping to clean them off first. We also had to contend with a bat that wanted on the boat again. Winds are picking up so I don't know if the water will ever set up right for the run. It sounded like 110 feet of water and 95 to 107 down was the ticket for the bruiser kings.

Got a late start this morning (5:45). I was lucky it seems as though it was a late start for everyone this morning. I went 3 for 4 today. 16#, 18#, 10# kings. 130 to 150 feet of water worked best for me today at 95 to 145 down on the riggers and 20 passes on the pound ball. Aqua fly and glow pearl yuck were my most productive hardware.

I started out in 140 feet of water and went 2 for 4 this morning. All releases for me were 120 down. They came on a large Beech hold flasher/glow white with a green blue glow fly. Nice day on the pond; it was flat. I had to deal with a bat for the first time ever that was trying to land on my boat in 200 feet of water. I believe I will start at 100 feet of water on Friday. The salmon are just starting to get ready for the run. I expect they will be stacking up shortly and I can't wait for the water to cool down or the thermo cline rises.

Went out fishing on Reel Magic's boat this morning and went 2 for three. We did not get any action until 140 feet of water and it was slow for us. The king's came on a Pro King /Green -Black octopus. Water was warm and had our hits at 90 down.

8/10/03

Fished in 40 feet of water this morning and did not get a hit till I got to the 90 feet of water mark. Went 2 for 4 today and the hot item was the glow squid 62 down. I would start in 90 feet of water and 55 to 70 down on Sunday.

8/7/03

Fished 3 hours this morning and went 2 for 4.I managed to get a King and a Rainbow. All my hit's came at 210 feet of water and between 30 to 80 down. Squid and the green, blue, glow Howie fly worked best. There was a 4-degree temperature change between 170 feet of water and 225.

I finally finished my web program for now and hope fishermen will contribute to my forum.

Went out by myself again today and started in 40 feet of water. I went 2 for 4 today and most of the action was in 60 to 70 feet of water. The hits came between 28 and 60 down. I had them hit on the green crinkle glow fly and pearl dodger. No flasher hits as of yet. I tried the pound ball but was unsuccessful so I switched the wire to a dipsie and missed a decent one on it. I fished from 4:30 am to 8 am. I marked most of my fish between 35 and 75 feet of water straight out from the harbor. It seems like a good time to get the wire out! Good luck in the tournament! If anyone is interested in getting in the tournament and fishing with me let me know at the e-mail link above via my logo.

7/24/03

Started fishing at 4am and had my poles set by 4:20 am. I went by myself so I ran only 3 poles. First fish was in 70 feet of water and 35 down. It came on "00" metal chrome dodger with raised bumps and green tape on one side with a green glow Howie fly at 4:30am. The king was about 18#. Second fish came at 80 feet and 55 down. It came on a large coyote flasher in red with silver tape on each side using the glow green fly also. The king was about 10#. I had 1 release today and also missed another one on the dodger fly combo. I was done fishing by 7am. Today's action was slowed because of the strong northerly winds in previous days.
